Vic; Bracks announces upgrade for treacherous highway
The Victorian government has speeded up the upgrading of a treacherous stretch on the
South Gippsland Highway near Koo-wee-rup, 60 km south-east of Melbourne.
The stretch of highway was the site of a bus accident last night in which 19 people were injured.
Victorian Premier STEVE BRACKS has told radio 3AW that VicRoads has fast-forwarded
roadworks to resurface the section of highway where last night's accident occurred.
He says the $400,000 operation will start in a fortnight.
In last night's accident 19 people including 18 foreign tourists were injured when
the 22-seater bus slid out of control and down a cliff on the highway at about 11pm.
The crash occurred just metres from the site where five people died in a three vehicle
collision on Australia Day.
