Might any of your readers have suggestions for National Geographic magazines? They are nice magazines. I hate just to recycle them.

I lost my job recently after 20 years of steady employment. Never having had to use community services, such as a food pantry or energy assistance, much less even thinking about it, has all changed. I live in a small town and went to the food pantry. I was shocked. I had no idea how many people in this country — the wealthiest country in the world — were struggling with something as simple as food to feed their families. It breaks my heart. How could I have gone so long without thinking of the less-fortunate?

No matter what you think of George W. Bush, he knew how to throw out the first pitch to start every baseball season for eight years. And he didn't wear "mommy" jeans.

Well, folks, if I understood the lady at the bank, very soon you will be paying an extra charge for every check you write to pay a bill or spend at a store. They want to stop the use of the paper and want you to use the Internet or have the debit automatically withdrawn every month.

To the person commenting about the "Indiana Police State" on the Indiana Toll Road: The speed limit is 55 mph, so if you are going faster, you should get a ticket. If you want to go faster legally, try going faster east of the Portage toll plaza. The limit changes to 70 mph a mile or so east of it.

Everyone is complaining about gasoline prices. The gas stations aren't guilty. The oil companies that everyone blames are not guilty. It is Wall Street and our government who are to blame. The president and Congress allow the speculators to influence the prices. They are draining our life-blood.

The only obstructionist I respect is state Rep. Chet Dobis, D-Merrillville. He apparently doesn't run with the "crowd." The rest slithered back with their tails between their legs, with the unions there to greet them.

The person wondering about secondhand smoke bothering dogs can relax a little. Smoke rises and, unless your dog lies on the ceiling, it shouldn't be affected too much.

Instead of breaking the law and disregarding children's safety by driving around the bus' stop arm, may I suggest leaving for work earlier?

Why have they not arrested the BB shooter yet? It's my son's friend and he's been bragging about it. Come on; let's get on the ball and arrest this kid.

I totally agree with the reader who said pop culture is the cancer to the moral fabric of this great nation. Too many of us seem obsessed with the plethora of no-talent celebrities who are merely famous by birth, and have little to nothing else working for them.

I was so happy that Oprah was finally going to be gone, but now I hear Rosie O'Donnell is taking over Harpo Studios and is going to have a new daytime show. Great.

No, you are not the only one sick and tired of the obnoxious Jane Lynch in those commercials. Enough, already.
