TAS:Tas 'wallowing in mediocrity': report
Former Tasmanian minister JULIAN AMOS has come out with a devastating finding on his
state, saying it's wallowing in the comfort of mediocrity, and needs a substantial increase
in its population, or it will fall further behind the rest of the country.
The former Labor minister has interviewed 60 Tasmanian CEOs, union leaders, heads of
peak industry bodies, economists, heads of government agencies and political commentators.
In his damning assessment of the state's economy, Dr AMOS says the island state is
being hamstrung by a poor planning system, excessive protest action and the appearance
of public sector instability, owing to Labor's minority government partnership with the
Greens.
He predicts the state is fast becoming an aged care facility in a national park.

FED:Wilkie turns down committee spot
CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has turned down a spot on the federal
government's standing group on Christmas Island, saying Australia wants action, not talk.
The former intelligence officer has launched a blistering attack on the government's
approach to asylum seekers in the wake of last week's boat accident which killed at least
30 people.
He wants Labor to immediately double its humanitarian intake of refugees as well as
boosting "disruption" operations in Indonesia to stop boats setting sail.
"The government has dropped the ball," Mr Wilkie told ABC Radio on Monday.
"Whatever it is doing is clearly not working.
"Even the best defence force ... is still going to struggle to pick up small wooden
boats in that big ocean, (so) you've got to stop the boats leaving Indonesia.
"It has to be ramped up, we have to hunt the smugglers down and put them out of business."
He rejected the government's proposed standing group as unnecessary, joining ranks
with the opposition, which has already refused to be involved.
"This isn't a case of setting up another committee and talking about it for another
six months," Mr Wilkie said.
"This is a case of looking at what we can do now and implementing them now.
"If we wait another six months, more people are going to die."
Mr Wilkie revealed that Opposition Leader Tony Abbott had offered to double Australia's
humanitarian intake in a bid to win the independent MP's support in forming government.
Mr Wilkie said it was time for the opposition to resurrect the offer.

Opposition Leader TONY ABBOTT says Aboriginal people should be treated like normal

He's made the comment in a passionate speech to a Sydney event on promoting opportunities
for Aborigines.
Mr ABBOTT says he wants to be part of a generation of political leaders .. which gives
Aboriginal people the real and honoured place in our midst .. rather than just keeping
them as a cultural curiosity on the fringes of society.
He's acknowledged indigenous issues haven't played much of a role in the election campaign.

Vic: Scubadivers take to noughts and crosses for appeal
By Edwina Scott
MELBOURNE, April 2 AAP - The fundraising bar has been set a bit higher.
A group of intrepid scuba divers are spending Good Friday in a purpose-built tank playing
noughts and crosses to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital appeal - and attempt
a world record while they're at it.
Peter Webster, who owns a diving business, managed to convince 36 of his mates to take
up the challenge, after breaking the Guinness World Record for extreme ironing underwater
in 2008.
Two divers enter the tank at Melbourne's Federation Square in one-hour shifts clutching
notebooks and pens.
"We thought, let's try for something else," Mr Webster told AAP.
"People find it quite amusing that we're playing noughts and crosses and they put some
money in the tin."
The scuba divers aim to break the current record of 24 hours for consecutive underwater
games of noughts and crosses, by playing for an epic 36 hour stretch.
Diver Gary Deacon kicked off the the first shift at midnight.
"Kids absolutely love it - staring at people underwater," he said.
"I tend just to lay down the bottom and focus out there."
But he says his noughts and crosses skills have deteriorated.
"I reckon they got worse, I was getting tired," he laughed.
Police officers visit the Melbourne's Federation Square every two hours to validate
the challenge Mr Webster says he is confident of.
Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters also pushed the physical
barriers to tip in funds for the appeal.
An inaugural 24-hour relay was held in central Melbourne that saw 80 firefighters run
more than 200km before the final lap ending at the Eastern Hill fire station in East Melbourne
on Friday morning.

NSW: Man who fatally stabbed pregnant teen unfit for trial
A Sydney judge has likened the violent stabbing death of a pregnant teenager .. to
her having died in a natural disaster.
In deciding her attacker was mentally unfit to stand trial .. NSW Supreme Court Justice
IAN HARRISON said she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
30-year-old CRAIG JAMES GRANT had been staying at the same southwestern Sydney guesthouse
as the 17-year-old and her 24-year-old partner ANDREW O'GRADY .. when he attacked them
in July 2007.
He woke the couple with a loud knock at their door and started brandishing a knife.
When the teen attempted to escape .. GRANT stabbed her in the chest before turning
the knife on Mr O'GRADY.
He suffered minor wounds during the struggle .. but the teen died.
Justice HARRISON today found GRANT was unfit to stand trial .. and ordered he be found
not guilty of a murder and attempted murder by reasons of mental illness.
He said the woman's death had been an unavoidable tragedy.

SYDNEY, Dec 6 AAP - Police are investigating an incident in which an elderly man fell
to the pavement as the wife of former NSW premier Neville Wran was reversing her car down
a driveway in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
Jill Wran was reversing out of her driveway on Wallis Street, Woollahra, at about 6.30pm
(AEDT) on Wednesday when she was alerted to the presence of a 79-year-old man on the footpath.
"The woman exited the vehicle and found an elderly man wearing a leg brace lying on
the footpath," police said in a statement.
A walking aid was next to the man.
The woman alerted ambulance officers who took the man to St Vincent's Hospital, where
he has undergone surgery for fractures to his hip, leg and arm.
He remains in a stable condition, police said.
Police said it was too early to say whether the woman had knocked the man over, but
inquiries were continuing.
The Seven Network on Saturday reported that Jill Wran was involved in the incident,
the man was in a critical condition and no charges had been laid.
Anyone with information on the incident who had not spoken with police were urged to

Vic: Police dispute resolved as new year count down begins
By Catherine Best
MELBOURNE, Dec 31 AAP - A dispute which threatened to leave tens of thousands of Victorian
New Year's Eve revellers without full police protection has been resolved.
The Police Association had planned a boycott of patrols in the popular Mornington Peninsula
town of Rye tonight unless Victoria Police command provided riot helmets to protect officers
in the event of a repeat of violent outbreaks.
Three police were injured last New Year's Eve in Rye, about 95 km south of Melbourne
on the peninsula, when about 100 rioters pelted police with bottles and chairs.
The planned boycott - outlined in an 11th hour prohibition notice - was overruled early
this afternoon by WorkSafe Victoria.
The union is dissatisfied and has not ruled out legal action in the event of a repeat
of last year's violence around Rye, which it considers dangerous.
"We're hoping that nobody gets injured this evening, let's wait and see what happens,"
Police Association assistant secretary Bruce McKenzie said.
In a force concession, about 160 police patrolling the peninsula will be issued with
protective shields, but the union says that's not good enough.
"The Police Association acknowledges that policing can be a risky and dangerous profession
but those risks and dangers can be and ought to be reduced as much as possible.
"Workers are entitled to come home in the same condition they went to work, the same
should definitely apply to our members."
WorkSafe has committed to a review of police equipment as part of its ruling today.
Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Evans said police command would work with the union
to head off a similar stand-off next year and that issuing helmets was a possibility in
future.
"Nothing's off the drawing board."
But Mr Evans said current conditions were safe.
"Right across Victoria there is New Year's Eve (celebrations), from time to time you
get some drunken youths ... police are trained in that and police take the appropriate
action - this is not G20."
Thousands of people are expected to descend on the state's beaches tonight as scorching
40 degree temperatures draw huge crowds.
The heat has heightened fears of alcohol-fuelled violence.
In Melbourne up to 500,000 people are expected to flock to the city to watch a midnight
fireworks spectacular.
Big crowds are also expected at Phillip Island and on the Surf Coast.
Mr Evans warned revellers to "take it safe".
"If you plan to drink too much have somebody around ... so that they can look after
you," he said.
"The last thing you want is to end up in the police cells or end up in court, it's
just not worth it."

Vic: Man grabbed mother-in-law months before death, inquest
MELBOURNE, Feb 1 AAP - The son-in-law of a woman who was brutally killed in her home
had manhandled her months before her death, a Melbourne inquest heard today.
Marea Yann (Marea Yann), 69, was bludgeoned to death in her Healesville home, north
east of Melbourne, on September 29, 2003.
An inquest into her death started today at Melbourne Coroners' Court.
In a statement read to the court, her son Jeffrey Yann said his mother phoned him in
April 2003 and said her son-in-law James Unumadu had been physical with her, grabbing
her and throwing her out of the house a few days prior.
Mr Yann visited the Frankston South home of his sister Pauline and her husband after
his mother said she was concerned Mr Unumadu was assaulting his wife, the court heard.
Mr Yann said that after he confronted his brother-in-law about "manhandling" his mother,
Mr Unumadu produced a knife and attempted to grab him by the throat.
The court heard Mr Unumadu and his wife later told police Mr Yann was the aggressor
in the incident and took out a restraining order on him.
Mr Yann said his mother believed her son-in-law was an evil man and she wanted her
daughter to leave him, the court heard.
Mr Unumadu appeared at the beginning of today's inquest, but coroner Paresa Sparos
excused him from giving evidence after she was advised he did not wish to take part in
the inquest.
The inquest, which is expected to last three days, continues.

While manual server monitoring was an adequate solution earlier in the company's history, once DPF began providing 24 hour/7 day and 365 days/year processing services on a contractual basis, it became obvious that these manual procedures would quickly become prohibitively expensive. After evaluating alternative NT monitoring solutions, DPF ultimately selected RippleTech LogCaster for its superior versatility, its ability to seamlessly integrate with NT servers, and its exceptional ease-of-use.
According to David Sitver, Director of Technical Services and Support for DPF Data Services, When we became contractually committed to providing 24/7 services on a year-round basis, we realized that it was absolutely critical for us to be able to continually and cost-effectively monitor our mission critical servers on a real-time basis to ensure maximum uptime. RippleTech LogCaster allowed us to feel very comfortable about making that 24/7 commitment to our customers, because it met or exceeded all of our expectations in terms of performance and reliability, and also featured a very friendly user interface that made it simple to implement and use.
"We view DPF Data Services adoption of RippleTech LogCaster as yet another important endorsement for this powerful NT network monitoring utility," said Ed Strobel, Vice President of Marketing for Ripple Technologies. "DPF's use of the software to support mission-critical servers committed to providing 24/7 processing performance clearly demonstrates that RippleTech LogCaster is without question a very dependable solution."
RippleTech LogCaster uniquely provides network administrators with the ability to screen out non-critical messages produced by the Windows NT "event log." Using this advanced filtering capability, administrators can save valuable time since they no longer need to sift through the volumes of messages that the NT event log routinely produces in order to find those of a critical nature. Instead, they can customize the filters for their particular system, select the warning and diagnostic messages that are important, and then eliminate those that are not important to the system. Moreover, the filters can be changed at any time as system requirements change and the priority given to different alerts changes. The versatile LogCaster can also monitor devices attached to the system such as printers and fax servers to ensure that the devices are online and operating properly.

Barbie girls... and boys.(Reprint)
This news was brought to you by www.7days.ae
Ask anyone for their first impressions on Australian food, and chances are they will adopt a phoney accent and talk about 'throwing another shrimp on the barbie, mate'.
Like it or lump it, but legendary Australian comedian and actor Paul Hogan has a lot to answer for.
The 'Crocodile Dundee' star famously uttered that phrase in an advertising campaign and it stuck.
Of course, he also claimed that 'Fosters' was Australian for a certain tasty beverage, so we know he doesn't speak the truth.
But although we may tease the Aussies about their shrimps, we can't give them too much stick for their barbecue skills. It's a way of life Down Under, and we could all learn something from this Aussie institution.
As well as being a fitness fanatic and our weekly Wellbeing columnist, Phil Harte is a trained chef. And Phil will grill anyone who claims they know how to barbecue food better than an Australian.
He says: "We are the barbecue country. Here we have the great outdoors, the barbecue, like an old bush oven, and all this great Australian produce and it's as fresh and healthy as you can get.
"Forget shrimps, we don't do that. We call them prawns and we get a big bucket of them and cook them on the barbecue. And it's not just prawns remember, we also like to cook up the other delicious seafood we have at our disposal too. We'll also cook great beef sausages, fantastic steaks and some great lamb cutlets too.
"How could any other country lay claim to producing better barbecues than us when we have all this?"
Most Australians back home will be looking forward to another top-quality feast on Wednesday for their big day, and who can blame them.
But while they'll enjoy a nice relaxing day, probably with a few nice cold drinks thrown in for good measure (probably not Fosters), things won't be too unhealthy.
Just think about the sensational spread they'll be tucking into. From delicious fresh seafood to tasty grilled meats, it'll all be accompanied by sensational salads and fresh produce. It would appear as if a decent barbecue from time to time could be the way forward for us all.
Phil explains: "The great thing is it's just nice, fresh food every time and it's a great time for family and friends to get together and enjoy it in a great atmosphere. You could go out to a restaurant for a nice meal but I don't think you'd trade a good barbie in for the world to be honest. "And it's been like that for as long as I can remember.
You know some of the celebrity chefs might talk about marinades. And while many people do enjoy them, for others it's a bit more simple than that.
Go round to your old man's house for example and you'll get the Barramundi, the Snapper and the prawns cleaned and thrown on whole. Forget the marinades, it tastes great as it is.
"But you'll also get some great salads which will be made up by friends and some fresh coleslaws too."
