Qld: Australian Family Association backs Howard s IVF ban

By Chris Herde

BRISBANE, Aug 2 AAP - Single women using IVF programs to have children was "moral and
ethical bankruptcy", the Australian Family Association (AFA) said today.

AFA Queensland president Patty Smith backed Prime Minister John Howard's call yesterday
to amend the Sexual Discrimination Act to stop lesbians and single women having IVF babies.

She said the rights of the child overrode all other issues.

"For a woman to make a conscious choice before conception to deny a child two parents
was tantamount to moral and ethical bankruptcy," Ms Smith said.

"Children are not handbags, they're not accessories, you can't use them as commodities
just because you feel like having a baby.

"You don't have an absolute right to have a child but a child has an absolute right
to have two parents."

Mr Howard's move follows a court ruling in Victoria that a state law banning lesbians
and single women using the IVF program had breached the federal act.

The federal government wants the amendment to ensure states such as Victoria and Western
Australia maintain legislation which bans single women and gay couples from using IVF
technology.

Ms Smith said children's rights should not be harmed because of lifestyle choices.

"That's a choice that people make and they shouldn't think they're being discriminated
against," she said.

"To deny a child a father is discriminating against that child."

Inspector Rix said Ms Doherty had kept a number of appointments yesterday morning but
had missed at least one of them.

Police were appealing to friends of Ms Doherty to help detail her movements in the
hours leading up to the fatal attack.

He said police had identified a possible weapon, but declined to say what it was.

Mr Doherty, who had been shopping, returned to find his wife's body in the bedroom,
Inspector Rix said.

It was not clear whether there had been forced entry to the house, but there had been
some disturbance of items within the house, he said.

Although burglary was possible, there had only been eight burglaries in the past two
months in the secluded area, he said.

It appeared there was no struggle between the attacker and Ms Doherty.

"It looks as though she's been surprised," he said.

"The indications are that she may have just come home."

Insp Rix said Mr Doherty apparently had an illness and was not working full-time. The
nature of his work was not presently known.

Asked whether the illness was physical or psychological, Insp Rix said it was "a bit of both".

Qld: Gay and lesbian newspaper investigated

BRISBANE, Dec 14 AAP - A homosexual newspaper depicting a naked angel engaged in oral
sex on the front page has caught the attention of Queensland's chief censor.

Brother Sister, a free fortnightly paper published and distributed in Brisbane, features
the scene in its latest edition.

Queensland Fair Trading Minister Judy Spence confirmed the Queensland censor was investigating
the newspaper following a complaint from a Brisbane man.

"If it is deemed offensive, it can be withdrawn from circulation and the publisher
can be prosecuted," she told ABC radio today.

The complainant, who had picked up the paper on a footpath in inner-city West End has
described the latest edition of the paper as pornographic and offensive trash.

He said its front page showing a male angel receiving oral sex should not be freely
available on the streets.

"I'm not rattling the moralistic bandwagon, I'm certainly not doing the Rona Joyner
on this, I just think it's bad at Christmas," he told ABC radio today.

The paper's general manager has defended the front page image, saying more offensive
pictures were found in magazines available in newsagencies.

"I don't think it is offensive at all," manager Ray Mackenroth told ABC radio.

QLD: Skydiver s body undiscovered in paddock for a week

By Barbara Adam

BRISBANE, Aug 2 AAP - A skydiver who fell 4,000 metres to his death with an unopened
parachute strapped to his back lay undiscovered in a farm paddock for a week.

The 39-year-old man's body was found yesterday by a farmer in the parachutists' drop zone
at Toogoolawah in the Brisbane Valley, Queensland police said today.

He had jumped from a plane along with 10 other experienced skydivers on July 25 and police
are investigating why the man was not reported missing.

It appeared to be a suicide. Police said they found a note, thought to be written by the
man, but would not release its contents.

They questioned why the skydiving club involved did not conduct a head count at the end of
the day.

Australian Parachute Foundation (APF) coaching director Graeme Windsor said the skydiving
company had not breached any safety standards because under regulations approved by the Civil
Aviation Safety Authority, head counts are only required for novice parachutists.

But Mr Windsor he could not explain why the man had not been missed.

It was unusual that no one at the drop zone realised the man had failed to show, and in the
week he lay dead in the paddock his friends, family and co-workers did not report him missing
to police.

He said the man's death was probably not accidental, judging by a note left at the
parachutist's clubhouse.

"The statement in the note was pretty unequivocal - it was not an accident," Mr Windsor
said.

The dead man, from Kingston south of Brisbane, had made more than 200 jumps, been a member
of the APF since 1991 and held a B-class skydiving licence, giving him the freedom to jump
unsupervised.

In the wake of the man's death, the APF is reviewing its safety procedures.

"We understand that this person has gone to considerable length to circumvent the drop zone
procedures to facilitate his own demise," Mr Windsor said.

The man had worn two correctly packed parachutes - believed to be his own - but had not
pulled either ripcord during his descent, he said.

The dead man did not have an automatic parachute deployment devic. He had managed to be the
last one out of the plane so he was the furtherest from the drop zone.

Mr Windsor said the man had also arranged the incident so it would not be noticed for some
time, hiding the note in gear that was routinely left at the skydiving clubhouse in
Toogoolawah during the week.

The man would have jumped out of the plane at 4,000 metres and been travelling at about
220kph on impact, he said.

Toogoolawah police said the matter would go to a coronial inquiry.
